Deadlift is one of the most honest tests of athletic capacity.
When I ask someone their lifting numbers they usually want to talk about the bench press. While it does tell us something about their weight training ethic and how long they’ve spent in the gym or maybe even a guy's raw upper body power.
Nothing impresses more than a guy that can comfortably deadlift over two and a third x bodyweight.
The best resources I’ve come across for deadlifting are Pavel Tsatsouline and Andy Bolton. Very different body shapes but great pullers.
It’s possible to have a big bench press but still be weak on the field. I’m yet to see a big deadlifter who doesn’t crush guys on the rugby league field.
Like-wise you don’t see guys who lift big weights that aren’t lean unless they’re really working hard to get big (and may be working hard to get fat). When you can lift big weights you use more fuel. Think of the fuel consumption used in sprinting to the shop in a Ferrari Vs hurrying in a VW buggy.
Get strong and great things happen.
Here is the best resource to get you started.

I recently did the Dan John 40 Day challenge deadlifting every session for 40 sessions in a row over a 50 day period.
At the end of it I hit 205kg. A lifetime PB and just over the 2.5 X Bodyweight mark.

(My deadlift is at 1:40 on the video – The Strength Essentials seminar ran well at the 20 person capacity)
My lifetime goal is a 3x body weight deadlift which I’ll edge towards during this block of gymnastics with a modified Justa Method.
