Thanks for your interest mate. Everyone I know who’s done the Paleo thing seriously has had significant improvements in performance and health. I think it’s worth giving a crack.. especially in an olympic year!
With the milk I would cut it for a month and see how you feel/perform. When you go back to it use raw milk (Cleopatra’s or another brand in WA? from the organic shop) and if you don’t have any negative effects in terms of performance stick with it. I get a few pimples and sometimes gas when I have too much dairy so I don’t eat a lot of it.
Whey Protein is fine because it’s just whey which is very low allergenic but I would go for a plain whey, cold processed whey. That kind of whey is much better because the proteins aren’t denatured by heat. Avoid proteins with tonnes of added shit/vitamins/artificial sugars and no Casein either.
Coffee – if your adrenal function is strong then go for it. I would save it for pre-exercise and game day. For most people caffeine is a performance enhancer but if you overuse it you’ll do more harm than good. Too many stimulants make you over-tired. Caffeine + Carnitine seems to be a really good mix for me. Adrenal function testing could be good option if you’re having trouble getting started in the mornings, slow recovering between sessions or if you have a lot of joint aches.
I take 500mg-1.5g of carnitine on mornings where I have a big training session. Amino acids are also good pre and during performance (half time) when BCAA’s drop so does concentration and reaction time. 1.5-3g is a good starting dose, you might end up taking 5-10g around weights sessions. Using some supplements to relax the nervous system and alkalise the body post-workout will also help. I use spirulina whenever I use amino acids. Try it at training before you use it in any big games.
How’s the post-op recovery going?
Update 6 months post

Great to hear you’re progressing with your strength and commitment to health. If you decide to get your diet in line with your training goals (do the paleo thing) I’m sure you’ll get the results you want. I’ve had another few players come on board with it here over the last month. One has seen abdominals for the first time in his life and a record on the vertical jump too! We test vertical jump often here because it correlates pretty well with acceleration, even though not many of the guys jump that often in the game!
Get an ab-wheel from K-mart. It will cost you $15 and it’ll get results a lot faster than sit-ups!
The Paleo thing is basically going grain (especially wheat, barley, rye and oats), legume (beans and chick peas etc) and dairy free for a month. You eat meat (seafood included), vegetables, some nuts and fruit along with herbs and spices. Drink water and green tea. These are the most nutrient dense foods that got us to where we were as a human race before the industrial revolution. Transitioning back to organic foods (the way food always was) is a positive change too!
Take it easy on the alcohol. Coffee is up to you but it can be good to have some time off from it.
Because you have less insulin load (from carb intake), less inflammatory stuff (gluten etc.) and less toxins (colours, preservatives etc) you’ll lose weight.
My paleo resources on keegansh.com are gradually growing so you should have some more tips soon. If you’ve got other specific things that you need to work on then have a look at my supplements article or send me your questions.
Is Paleo for amateur athletes?

Great to hear from you mate. Getting big is a battle for most guys. The best tools are smart training, sleep, lots of quality protein, adequate amounts of carbs and fats. Amino acids with some sort of alkaliser like chlorella or acai berry powder, around your workouts as well as magnesium can be really good supplements to help with your goals. Glutamine would also be a good tool. I need to send you through my Q&A template to know where you’re missing out at the moment. Knowing what you’re like I’d say you’re probably doing too much and not getting enough food and rest. Getting stronger in the 5-10RM range is always a good thing when you want to gain muscle mass.
As far as cholesterol goes I would tell him to look up Gary Taubes – he has a few books and some podcasts with UGWellness. They will explain what high cholesterol really means. Basically he’s probably got too much inflammation in his body or micro-lesions which require cholesterol to patch them up.. it’s not dietary cholesterol that’s the problem it’s whatever is making him fragile on the inside. The liver makes most of our cholesterol so cutting it out of the diet is bad news. If you send through some info about his blood test results and diet then I might be able to point him in the right direction. Paleo would be a good thing for him regardless of what else is going on.
A new start in 2012
Hey Keeg’s how are you going mate?
From what I just spent the last hour reading I am guessing the answer to that question is “GREAT”. Your blogs are both educational and inspirational mate. I will definitely be reading more of them in the coming days.
Its Been a long time mate hasn’t it, too long!!! 2004 was probably the last time I saw you. Sounds like you have done and achieved a hell of a lot since then too. Good on you!
Like they say though it is a small world isn’t it. The only reason I came across your blog is because I am mates with Daryl Millard and saw his post on Facebook about being on the paleo diet and your article about it. I grew up in the same area as Daz, same school, same rugby league club, same cricket club, only he was a couple of years below me.
Once I started reading your articles mate I couldn’t stop, until I looked at the time and realised I will be late for a birthday party if I don’t stop myself haha. I have been listening to the wellness guys podcasts and rob wolf, and have been intrigued by the paleo phenomenon. I haven’t yet read the paleo solution but am about the order it and see what it is all about. I think I am ready to take the step, I just need to find out more about it.
It’s funny how things seem to happen like they do sometimes. I went for a run this morning and my mate Brad who is also an inspiration to me was telling me about this book I need to read, called Born to Run, and then scrolling through your blog i also read your post about it. That will also be on the amazon.com order haha. Call it coincedence or what you will but on that run I also ran into Daryl’s old man Shane for the first time in years, with his Norths SG Ball squad ready for a sand dunes session, and had a bit of a chat.
Anyway, it all just seemed to make sense. All the reading i have been doing lately, the podcasts I have been listening to, my current situation, my mate today, seeing Daryl’s dad, and then reading all about you. I am a big believer in things happening for a reason. I am inspired. Its time for a bit of change in my life and there is no better time than the present, so i am going to learn more about the paleo diet and give it a go, among making some other changes in my life.
Life isn’t bad here. I am currently teaching PE at my old school, and am co owners in a small gym near my folkes place in peakhurst, where i do some PT and do my own strength work. Still love it like the old days back at the uni gym with yourself, Butters and Murph haha. I have been playing footy in the Illawarra for collegians for the last couple of years but may be hanging up the boots this year after more than my fair share of injuries.
Anyway keeges, it is great to see you’re doing incredibly well in your life mate.I don’t see many people from uni these days but catch up with Louisa Bonner now and then, who will be stoked to know you’re doing so well.
Say hello to Darryl when you see him Mate and I look forward to reading more of your blogs in the future. I will let you know how I go with my paleo adventure.
