Bogus belief No. 1
It looks like she's getting enough sun
The sun is dangerous we should be protect ourselves from it with SPF 50+ cream
First let’s acknowledge light as the source of all life, both on a scientific level and in religious teachings the world over. (Quantum physics has demonstrated that light itself is the balance of positive and negative which when united give off light.) All life on earth has evolved in the presence of light, without our sun there would be no life on earth. From this understanding alone it becomes absurd to think that we should be avoiding it at all costs.
From another perspective we see in animal studies that the health and nutritional qualities of animals allowed to receive sunlight are superior to those the are kept under artificial lights. A key hormone which we refer to as a vitamin is a big part of why.
Vitamin D deficiency in many parts of the western world has become the norm rather than the exception. Studies have shown Vitamin D to be a key preventative factor for many lifestyle diseases (cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity). I believe that it’s the sun that has helped people in the Mediterranean region to have better health than their northern European dwelling sun deprived cousins. Vitamin D deficiency is most likely the result of spending more time indoors, phobia of the sun and a decrease in the quality of our nutrition (the animals that we eat spending more time indoors and eating less than optimal diets, milk pasteurisation (in some cases cows being maintained on engineered foods indoors)). Interestingly many strength coaches acknowledge that they get most of their best gains with their athletes during summer.
High powered sun creams containing titanium dioxide not only prevent Vitamin D production but research is showing they may be carcinogenic.
So what’s causing all the skin cancer in Australia??I believe that sunlight like most things has an optimal dose. There is such a thing as getting too much sun, just as too much exercise can be just as harmful as too little. There is a certain amount of stress involved in sun exposure. The first time our bodies see it after winter it might only take 20 minutes for you to burn but if you get 15 minutes a day each time the sun is out for a week and then the following week if you’re out for 20 minutes you’ll have no need to reach for the aloe vera. It’s all about balance.
Every time you peel because of over exposure to the sun your risk of skin cancer increases so the trick is to gradually build your tolerance through spring and always avoid getting burnt while still enjoying the sun. Most people do this on their calves, forearms and the back of their neck because they’re often exposed to the sun in casual clothes. It’s the sporadic exposure to the rest of the body on the occasional trip to the beach that presents a problem.
The people who have lived in Australia for many generations have black skin while most of those who came more recently have a paler complexion. The further we sit on the chalky white side of the scale the more careful we should be about our sun exposure and the more we’ll need to cover up with clothes and hats. Even light skinned people can become adapted to sunlight gradually although it might take thousands of freckles to do so. Incidentally the English who come to live in the south of France (where I live at the moment) all report that they tan better during their second and third summers here than their first, this suggests that each year we build our tolerance to the sun the less harm it’s likely to do us.
Cancer, Cancer, Cancer… we hear about it everyday in the media but my belief for skin cancer is the same as for any other. If we are out of balance with our environment then disease will come to correct that imbalance. First we general warnings, then disease and then finally if we don’t get the message the curtains will be drawn. Cancer rates continue to increase along with many other lifestyle diseases as society hands control of it’s health over to doctors (who often have a lower life expectancy than the society they’re meant to be keeping alive) and whoever can afford to advertise the most. Take a look around next time you’re in a public place and tell me I’m wrong.
The sun is the source of life and vitality, it can also send you to the hospital with 2nd or 3rd degree burns. Have a look at what happens to any other organism that is denied the sun and you’ll see that hiding from it is not the option. Do your research on sun creams and then think twice about lathering your children in them. Nature’s power should be respected. What is the sun if it’s not a symbol of that power!
