Into the Wild – Paleo Camping

Ever wanted to know what it’s like to live at natures whim? I have for years. Living from paleo food and having a garden / farm are part of my transition towards a simpler life. After 40+ weeks of preparing and competing in the Super League with the Catalans Dragons I’m loving living out of the back of the car and being closer to nature.

A few days away from the computer, facebook and blogging have been refreshing and a chance to work on a few simple pleasures that I haven’t lost myself in for a few months. I’ve been juggling, playing guitar, earthing, tanning, learning memory techniques and practicing mental arithmetic plus exploring forests and eating wild fruits. Cooking off a single gas cooker with just enough ingredients available to make a meal is a step back from the infinite possibilities of city living that have us making 10 decisions just to order a cup of coffee.
This is the side of “Paleo” lifestyle that’s often neglected. Paleo is not just about food. It’s about earthing through contact with mother earth, it’s about seeing where the first star comes out each night, it’s about seeing the moon cycles and noticing how cold the night is. It’s the simple things that soon become important when you’re sleeping in a makeshift shelter.

Transitioning to a Paleo lifestyle
Some of the best times of my life have been living out of a backpack hitching my way Colombia to Mexico or pulling off the side of the road to roll out my swag in the desert.
Don’t get me wrong. I love the life of a strength coach but being reminded that the simple joys of observing nature and living on the basics is an important lesson not to forget.
One of my goals in life is to have a farm / retreat to live in Paleo autonomy with enough abundance to welcome anyone who wanted to share part of their life’s journey with me. I realise that this wouldn’t be a hunter-gatherer existence, that might be too big of a jump for one lifetime.
As things become simpler success comes closer. The challenge for 2013 is to simplify my learning and coaching systems without losing any quality.
When was the last time you stepped “into the wild”?
