Thinking hard
Earlier in the year my youtube time was all about Joe DeFranco‘s training and my favourite podcast was Underground Wellness. Since Sean Croxton has been having less shows and I’ve been hitting the olympic lifts for the last couple of months I’ve been checking out a lot more Robb Wolf for health and nutrition info and Catalyst Athletics and California Strength for olympic lifting info. I’m really loving the challenge of getting some heavy tonnage off the floor and over my head with some powerful movements and since there isn’t anyone else around here who really shares my passion or has better technique than me I need to learn from 21st century mentor shaping the world – YouTube.
California strength have some of the USA’s top lifters training there and usually ham it up a bit for the cameras and Greg Everett on Catalyst Athletics who I came across through Robb Wolf’s podcast the Paleo Solution. He’s got a new book and DVD out which I might get at some stage but for now there is a tonne of info on his website and his youtube channel.
The olympic lifts have a lot of technique to them but they’re not as hard to get a basic handle on as most people think.
I read George Hackenschmidt’s book as well as Eugene Sandow’s. You can download them as PDF’s from a few places on the net. They’re two of the strongest men in history and getting anywhere near their performance levels one century later would be just as head turning as it was then!
Check out his book "The way to live"
Things I’m learning from doing are that lifestyle is massively important for how often I can train. If I miss a good nights sleep my training will be off for a couple of days. Usually it means I’ll miss a session. I’m eating really low carb but I’m not super lean. I feel good though so that’s the most important thing at the moment. I don’t care too much about abs I just want to be able to shift some metal and run and jump well.
I’m also learning French which is eroding my Spanish a bit but it’s good to be learning a new language!
What have you been learning??
