Why Supplement?
There was a time when soils were fertile and mineral rich, water was pure and electricity was only seen during storms. Those times are gone and with it the challenge for the human body to meet its needs are also under threat. Look around you and you will see more sickness in humans than any other species on the planet. Many of the things what we consider today to be food we wouldn’t even think of feeding to a monkey or our dog and yet we eat it and feed it to our children.
Understand ancient wisdom!
Today even when eating the most nutrient rich foods like meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, herbs and spices athletes can still struggle to meet their nutrient requirements. If you doubt this the I recommend you watch Paul Chek’s Nutrition: “The Dirt Facts.”
When athletes switch to a high quality diet that contains a lot of protein, moderate amounts of fat and moderate amounts of carbohydrate along with supplements such as creatine, amino acids, whey protein, magnesium, coconut oil, carnitine, vitamin D and fish oils based on individual needs, we see noticeable improvements in performance, recovery and overall well-being. We also see improvements when athletes exclude non-foods (processed foods) and processed grains like with the Paleo diet from their diets.
By getting some blood and saliva tests done at the Catalans Dragons we’ve been able to test for specific nutrient and hormone imbalances as well as measure detoxification capacity and insulin regulation. This functional nutrition work represents the new frontier in drug-free performance enhancement.
In April I’m going to be learning Charles Polquin’s biosignature method that I’m sure will help me build on what I learned in my FDN (Functional Diagnostics Nutrition) course.
There are certain genetically gifted athletes born from strong genetic lines who’ve been well treated, trained and fed who can perform at near optimal levels without supplements most athletes would have fewer injuries and better performance if they optimise their use of supplements.
