2021 While Plotting My Escape From Prison Island - Keegan.
10 days ago I weighed 81kg.
I'd been fasting for 5 days at the time.
I was 83-85kg before the fast.
I ate one meal, then fasted another 60hours.
At the same time I met Blake Wilson.
A talented young Rugby League player who needed Emergency Mass.
He was simply too light to be considered for the pro-league.
I’d been focussing on getting my body fat scan under 7% for months before meeting him.
I decided to take the challenge of MAXIMAL MASS GAIN with Blake.
As a result of the fasted training I was ravenously hungry for the week.
I feasted like never before on meat!
I ate, and I ate.
Mostly STEAK.
Some fruit.
Some milk.
No rice, pasta, bread or junk (slave) foods.
Yesterday I was 87kg for the second time in my life(!)
(The first time I had just finished a day of buffets and had a very full digestive system.
While working in France in 2012 with the Catalans Dragons, playing away in England)
Many times I've attempted to get to 87kg.
Many times I've failed.
Generally, because my digestive or immune system starts to struggle and I need to eat less to feel healthy.
The magic of fasting before bulking
Should we all FAST / REST the digestive system periodically?
Legendary strength coach Charles Poliquin used a "nutritional cleanse" on vegan protein powders before a 12-week training block.
Unfortunately for me, I didn't do well on pea or rice protein powders and I wasted a few hundred bucks on junk powders. Zero gains.
My version of this strategy was:
- Clean out the system.
- Prime the hunger hormones.
- Get INSULIN sensitive.
Then GAIN like never before!
Training has been Dense Strength Focussed using Daily Undulating Periodisation.
2 heavy days.
2 speed/volume days.

Generally, I've been tolerating volume better than ever before.
Even the fasted training wasn't as bad as tough as it has been in the past.
My optimised meat-based diet is working.

DO YOU NEED TO CLEAR the system to set up big gains?
This isn’t the first time I’ve had this result.
I've had similar results with 60-hour Pruvit ketones fasts where I make massive gains after a fast.
I also hit a lifetime best standing press.
My gains were not JUST fluid or fat.
Lifetime Best numbers mean a lot to me.
I work hard in the gym and I love getting to places I've never been before!

Addition - I ended up hitting 90kg for one day shortly after this & sitting above 87kg consistently. New lifetime bests and numbers I never thought I would see on the scales while staying lean, strong and healthy.
The lessons of this experiment remain largely unexplored in science and practice.
